Abstract

In this study, I address several features of divine guidance by exploring the majesty of the Qur’an as manifested through the concept of al-iʿtiṣām (holding fast to God’s path). This analysis draws upon rhetorical, grammatical, exegetical, and theological dimensions that reveal the greatness of this divine Book—one which, regrettably, many Muslims today are unfamiliar with even in terms of proper recitation, let alone understanding its profound meanings and the verses that testify to the perfection of the Creator’s design.

The term al-iʿtiṣām carries serious implications that warrant close attention, as understanding its true meaning is crucial for aligning one’s beliefs, speech, and actions with what is lawful in Islam. The concept of holding fast to God is not only significant, but essential, which led me to select the title of this study: “Exegetes’ Views on the Themes of Selected Verses on Holding Fast: An Analytical Study.”

This research aims to shed light on key lessons derived from the Qur’an as the primary source, while supporting insights are drawn from the Sunnah. In pursuit of this goal, the study seeks to answer the following questions: What are the reasons behind holding fast? How did some of the prophets (peace be upon them) exemplify iʿtiṣām? What does iʿtiṣām look like among the general public? And what are the selected images and models of iʿtiṣām that provide guidance for Muslims today.
